Would have been better staying, in a winning culture, playing regularly. Only benefits he's probably had is a pay rise and more intense/better training.

If he does get released I'd have him back. Be a great back 3 in the pack if we could go with Bentley, Storton and Minchella.

But isn't he likely to be doing the bulk of his training, in the evenings, at his D/R or loan club?

Not sure it will necessarily work like that, Bulliac. we have Josh Woods on a season long loan from Wigan. He is training with them in the day, and joining us for some of the evening sessions.

Yeah it's like that with most (if not all) DR players. They'll train with their full time team most of the time, but usually train with the part time team too. It's not like they just work part time while they're dual reg. Certainly Leeds players who dual reg with Fev will train with the Leeds full time squad primarily.

The idea that Bentley would have been better staying at Bradford than moving to Saints is quite frankly, ridiculous. I'm glad to see the lad doing well for himself and hope it gets better for him.

I'm not so sure. Dual reg/loan doesn't really work for some young players - take Jordan Lilley's example. Now Bentley may be the opposite but I don't think the suggestion is ridiculous.

I think Storton is from the same mould as Bentley and will do well for us.

If anything I think Storton could be better as he’s a bigger unit.

Well, I'm not so sure. Is he 'doing well for himself'? Most of last season farmed out to a club at the bottom end of the Championship and copping a hiding most weeks?

I guess time will tell. I hope he makes a breakthrough this season and plays a decent number of games for Saints. As has been said, still a young man and a lot of growing and developing left in him.

Last season he was training full time with Saints (and learning from players like Jon Wilkin, James Roby & countless others), whilst playing either for a Championship Dual Reg team, or occasionally for Saints themselves (those 3 games). From an outsider point of view, it looks like he improved and impressed enough to be given a chance in the first team, despite still only being young.
If he'd stayed at Bradford, he would have played Champ 1 all year, whilst full time training (probably) in a hybrid squad that with all due respect is of a lesser quality, so less opportunity to learn from that level of player. I can't see how that would be better for him.

This year the only difference is that he would be playing regularly in Champ rather than Champ 1 if he was at Bradford. The rest remains the same, except he's learning from Paulo instead of Wilkin. He's still around a far better quality of player in training every day, he'll still be playing regular Championship rugby (with Leigh) and he'll likely get a couple of SL games too.

Sure there'll be the odd player who would prefer to be at the lower level club, training with a lower level player (again, I mean no disrespect there, it's actually a reflection on the top quality of Saints) and might prefer the nicer atmosphere. But I'd say it'll be 1 in every 20 or so. And I'd be absolutely astounded if Bentley himself wasn't a better player for being at Saints for a year rather than a lower league club.

He was a huge loss for Bradford, no doubt. But I also don't doubt it was 100% the right move for the lad's career.

You may be right but I do wonder just how much training Bentley was actually doing at St Helens. With dual reg it tends to differ with each team. When we had the deal with Widnes in 2017 we got their players for the "captain's run" and that was it. No training with us at all and it told on the field.

If you take the Leeds example under McDermott if you weren't a regular in his 17 you were completely cut adrift and only called back in the dire-est emergency as Lilley found out between being farmed out to all and sundry (a bit like Bentley). Some players struggle to settle when they're being moved around like that.

I remain to be convinced that dual reg is the way to develop young players. To me it's a cheap way for SL clubs to pay lip service to development. If I was Bentley I'm not sure how long I would be satisfied with just "training" with Saints. I'm sure he went into the deal with his eyes open (at least I hope he did) but I doubt he gets excited about being farmed around Sheffield and Leigh.
