Pennies went out in 1971. Replaced by new pence.

Almost correct, though it was actually 'old' pence which were dispensed with in '71, only to be replaced by the new variety. However, following a very familiar pattern; new pence, plural and new penny, singular. Still a penny - all be it a new one
