I'm concerned that whoever we sign of SL standard will become de skilled and sufficiently unenthused that by the time the Qualifiers come round again they will be a shadow of their former self. Maybe we need to sign players that have something to prove and hope that the coaching environment can help them reach their potential. I would be very surprised if the recently acquired players at Leigh are able to maintain Super League standard after a few months in the Championship, if our experience is anything to go by.
That's a very pertinent point.
The biggest difference between us and Leigh over the previous season, is that Leigh clearly put strong emphasis on being top of the [early] league, whereas we clearly knew what we needed to do to get the extra home game in the eights and we did exactly that, and no more. FWIW, I believe the way Leigh attacked the first 23 games is the one we maybe ought to try and emulate. It would add focus and give meaning to the early season which wasn't there last time round - in short it would [hopefully] encourage the players to play games at SL speed and intensity, which again hopefully, we'd see the benefit of in the eights and beyond.
So let's go all out for 100%. Whether, or not, that will be any better for the fans is a moot point, though I guess winning games by a wide margin is better than some of the slapdash stuff we got in too many of the first 23 games last year.
Obviously, Leigh will have learned lessons from last season too, maybe how to approach the games against SL teams in the eights, so I'm sure they'll be improved too, but the competition between the two for the full season may the key to a slightly better chance for both of us.
