About half way up Ingleby Road from Girlington traffic lights, turn left on Princeville Road. Go right to the far end (its a dead end) and the club is on the right hand side. At the time it was more or less in the middle of nowhere, but houses have been built all along there now.

The building itself is still there. I paid a nostalgic visit about a year ago when I was over that side of town, and it was boarded-up and looked pretty derelict. The basic building seemed intact and the concert room was on the back - still seemed to be more or less as it was.

If someone had a win on the lottery it could be bought, refurbished and re-opened. Now that would be an awesome trip into the 70s and 80s for people of a certain vintage :ROCKS:

Good effort Paul, i just google mapped the Princeville and i can say with almost certainty that wasnt the place unfortunately...the mystery still continues, the place i saw limelight was a pub and from what i can remember was in the middle of an estate..the pub had a nightclub type venue attatched at the side and had a very low ceiling..it was a long hall type room...anyone know where gatsbys was ? according to their website they played there the same year..

IIRC Gatsbys is still there albeit a bombed-out shell halfway down the road connecting Westgate and Manningham Lane (Hamm Strasse?) on the right. It wasn't like you describe either. The only pubs I can think like that would be some gaff up in Thornton (Steelers?) or The Tyke up Thornton Road which was called summat else back then. Other than that you're on your own! You may have your wires crossed as the description fits The Princeville to a tee.

Hmmm

Middle of estate rings a bell for me. There was a short-lived venue on the Bell Dean Estate in Allerton that fits that description. I can't remember the name of it to be honest, but I remember going there. I've a feeling it was a WMC rather than a pub - might have been called The Belldean Club - or perhaps it was the Bell Dean pub??

But it was right in the middle of the estate, a real rough hole frankly. They had bands on there for a few months in the late 70s.

Ring any bells :USTUPID:

Talked to a guy yesterday that actually said he was at the same gig but...as he was 17 at the time he can only remember going up thornton road and turning up old road, or old lane ?? the guy who was driving told him to watch out for the turning into old road or lane thats how he remembered.. could be a red herring but you guys have mentioned that area quite a few times....

Old Road just off Thornton Road is right next to where the Tyke now stands (I drive past it twice a day).

Thanks for the link smiffythebull, interesting site.
This has got me reminiscing about all the bands i saw in that era. Saw Diamond Head at the Princeville also a brilliant reggae band called Jab Jab.

yeah, - Princeville on thursday nights, newcy brown -some cracking bands - I remember the Lee Kosmin band getting a hard time as they played some wacky chacky funk and the audience was waiting for some rock - Son of a Bitch though- fantastic!
Queens Hall - Vinegar Joe, John Dummer, Pat Travers, etc - and in my earlier incarnation I went to see the Pioneers and Millie Small at the Textile Hall ( I think Derrick Morgan was on too)- Hole in the wall, Penny Farthing - god, im getting older by the minute.......

No, the Goldsborough is the one just a few yards further up from the Corn Dolly. I believe it shut recently? Something i don't think will ever happen to the brilliant Dolly!

You're right, the Goldsboro is closed, as it has been so many times over recent years. It last stayed open for anything like a sustained period when 'Big Jim' (Wright) had it, a number of years ago. Looks now as though it's going to be offices or maybe a restaurant, they've obviously spent some serious money on it but no actual sign of it opening (as anything) at the moment.

I can't remember bands ever playing the golsborough, nor can I remember any other name to be honest, and I've been a regular at the Corn Dolly since the middle eighties when I first started at Royal Mail. I might have missed the bands though as I was also working in bands myself for a fair amount of the period covered, I rarely found time to go out and 'enjoy myself', if you know what I mean. :D
