Because they are the only people that knew about it other than the club. The club had nothing to gain from making it public. Quite the opposite. Have you seen the state of things surrounding Leigh since this came out? It has been a nightmare. Never has a so called 'banter page' been so inappropriately named! No advantage to Leigh at all in going to the press with this and disrupting the club and the team who are having enough problems as it is.
Brierley gets to put himself in the shop window by going public with the fact that he is 'up for grabs' in 4 weeks time. There is also a LOT of previous for info about Brierley being leaked to the press. His 'Rowley clause' that was made public within an hour of Rowley leaving the club as just one example.
Only one party had anything to gain by leaking this to the press and it wouldn't be the first time it had happened.
