McNamara: ban video refs! : Thu Oct 02, 2008 1:25 pm
http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/s ... ideo_refs/

I understand he may feel aggrevied with a few controversial decisions but this guy sure does like to whinge.

Maybe he has just read AP's song about him

I suppose it makes a change from most coaches calling for them to be used at ALL matches

This is 29, Acacia Road, and this is Eric, the schoolboy who leads an exciting double life. For when Eric eats a banana, an amazing transformation occurs. Eric is Bananaman

Should this thread not be renamed, "McNamara, Banana Video Refs"?

I'm glad to hear he's said he's going to shut up about refs next season. I was getting sick of hearing about it. It's the sort of thing you hear from coaches who are losing their grip. It does him no credit at all.

As for his proposal to get rid of video refs there is absolutely no chance of this happening.

Must say though.. I agree. I think the use of video ref's is starting to have a negative effect on the game. I certainly don't want to be stood waiting 5 mins for a decision at a non televised game and not even be able to make my own mind up on the legality of the try.

The full time ref's are getting video ref decisions wrong.. so how bad will it be with a non FT ref at the controls if they implement them at all matches?

Hard not to agree with any of that IMHO. I was talking about the self and same the other week with a mate / came up with the following instances.

I'm sure the following could be replicated to some degree by every other club in Super League. . . . but wouldn't that just serve to strengthen the point?

I've not posted these as a whinge (honest :-) ) just as a possible reference to the fact that maybe the Video ref isn't, at present/as currently being managed, all it's cracked up / supposed to be. . . .

Vs Leeds - Halley drops ball but kicks it forward before it hits the ground, then runs on, regathers and touches down. Perfectly good try as admitted by Scummins, "controller" of referees. Video ref disallows it.

Vs Hull Fc, Cup quarter final - perfectly good try (Again admitted by Scummins again . . . .) by T Newton . . . which would have won us the game - whether we deserved it or not. Disallowed by video ref.

Vs Hull KR, Evans try disallowed by VR for offside when everyone and his mum (if from Bradford?) could see Halley was at worst level.

Vs Wigan. Nero try disallowed for Knock on by Tadulala even though he had to reach up to his shoulder to touch it as he was already passing the ball, and when he did he touched the leading edge of the ball making it physically impossible for him to impart any forward motion and therefore knock the ball on. By the Video ref again.

Phil Clarke will argue that "these things even themselves out over the course of a year" . . . . I used to think he talk a bit of sense. Perhaps as a Bulls fan I'm blinkered to the other "side of the coin" and I'm being unfair in thinking Clarkey talks out of his rectum :D . . . but life is unfair at times

Bradford gave us Hockney, Leeds gave us Moyles.

We got one dodgy one this year - Hape at MM, long after it mattered. Thaat's sort of even.

You've also got the problem of video refs directing the man on the field through his earpiece which is supposed to be illegal.

Though TBH I think it's a problem with the general standard of officiating full stop and that comes from the Sod Hall down.

How can you have players given a lesser ban for an offence in Superleague (Hock grabbing hold of the ref) to a lesser offence in NL1 (Handforth mouthing off at the ref) to players given lifetime bans for catching the refs eye in BARLA.

The whole thing needs an overhaul with proper assessment and accountability for everyone including the executive.

and, IMHO, Scumming being held accountable for what he's done.

How can ANYONE even attempt to try defend the indefensible that is Scummings.

People used to bleat on about Greg McCallum (sp?) but things were far more transparent / better run from a spectator point of view.

(I do seem to feel rather strongly about this, don't I. . . . . I've no idea where all that's come from) I must be Graham Bradley and I claim my £5 :)
