It's a very simple argument.

1) Play derbies. Get more fans through the turnstiles but it's unfair on some teams being forced to play top sides no matter what.

2) Have it as a draw based on league position from last season. Much fairer to the teams but less fans will attend.

Depends if they want more fans or a fairer competition really.

Old Mr Jones went to his surgery for his annual health check. The practice nurse said to him, Mr Jones you have to stop masturbating. Why, he said. Because I'm trying to examine you she replied

And that always seems to be the top importance for the RFL and the clubs. So I expect it will go back to derbies for that very reason.

From what I hear from people attending the matches are of secondary importance. They go to be with supporters of other teams and enjoy the rugby. Holding derbies will not improve the gates unless these derbides were cancelled during the rest of the season. Last year we played Leeds four times so why would somebody go to Cardiff just for that match. Try this for an idea:
Play one match over Easter instaed of two and take one of the rounds of the Challenge Cup to Murrayfield.

I don't agree with the extra derbies, it just makes them boring and there's no anticipation when we play Leeds 3/4 times.

A lot of the fans that I spoke to on the weekend said that they would not go to Murrayfield again. There is nothing outside the stadium at Murrayfield and what pubs there were would not allow children in so it spoilt their weekend. The ground is too far from the centre of Edinburgh and the congestion on the roads due to the roadworks was horrendous.

Mind you, if you look on teletext this morning the blinkered RFL assured us that it was a complete success and was well attended by fans. The people in charge ought to take off their sunglasses and talk to fans and get some input as to what the real fans thought about the package as a whole. Personally, I thought it was poor and as a person who travels to Edinburgh on a regular basis, I did not enjoy it one bit and that annoyed me even more. I have never had a bad time there in the past and even the police were stopping any banter outside the pubs and making people move on or get arrested.
I will annoy a lot of you (maybe) but I wpould prefer to go back to Cardiff!!!!!!!!

Ten minutes walk from Haymarket! Not too far.

Nothing outside the stadium? Just as well all the action is inside the stadium eh?

It's like that Wembley, if not as bad. Nowt within cooee of Wembley either, that's why it'll never catch on as a venue. Who'd want to traipse around there? And that Old Trafford, even worse, its freakin' miles from Manchester centre. Never hold an event there. It'll be empty.

And as the RFL are in charge of Scotland's roadworks programme, what excuse can there be for causing digging up when a rugby league fan may be driving that way? Eh? None!

nc wrote:

... wait a minute. I'd forgot they are fitted with blinkers. That'll be why they didn't see the roadworks. Still no excuse though

nc wrote:

"Assured" would be a word applicable to someone on the defensive, and is inapplicable. The event simply was a success, by any reasonable measure, and whilst that doesn't mean everyone was delighted, they never are. You are entitled to have had as bad a time as you want - as long as you accept that the overwhelming reports everywhere are that the majority of people thought it was very good, and had a good time.

That said, only a fool would believe the RFL actually thought it was 100% perfect, but not as big a fool as one who would expect them to come out underlining any negatives and slagging their own event off.

nc wrote:

Sunglasses AND blinkers? But if that's what they wear, no bloody wonder they don't see the roadworks. Be fair.

nc wrote:

Ah, you are the "real" fan. Well, that would explain it.

Do you seriously suggest that the RFL doesn't carry out any feedback, market research etc.? If so you must be mad.

.. and no-one would contest your right to do so.

Why didn't you enjoy it? What was not to enjoy? Have you written to the RFL with some constructive details of this and how they could do it better?

nc wrote:
I have never had a bad time there in the past

hang on, you "had a BAD time"?? How on earth did you manage that? I too have been to Edinburgh several times, and for the life of me I can't understand how an adult who was not in a police cell could "have a bad time" there.

nc wrote:

Absolute bollox. You might have been moved on, and if all you do is loudly whinge and complain about every single thing then I'm not surprised, but let's just say your experience is unrepresentative. I haven't read of or come across a single person who had a bad word to say about the Edinburgh police before you, to me they seem to enjoy RL days as much as anyone.

No you won't, those who prefer Cardiff are perfectly entitled to do so, why would it "annoy" anyone? Come on, you may have genuine points to make buried somewhere in there, but why go OTT and try to annihilate a whole event and indeed a whole city?

Why not have 1st team this season choosing who they want to play next season, then 2nd team 2nd pick and so on...

It just might catch on.
