Sky will show Super League until 2022 : Thu Jan 30, 2014 7:19 pm
http://www1.skysports.com/other-sports/news/12040/9140875/sky-sports-secures-six-long-term-rights-agreements-across-six-different-sports

SKY have won the rights to be the only SL broadcaster until 2022.

Seems strange that this deal was concluded before coming anywhere close to the current deal expiring (2017), lets hope the RFL managed to get an increase SKY monies

Think figure being banded about is 200million over the 5 yrs of the deal. Last deal was 90-125million over five years depending on article you read. New deal covers more games per season though.

They are bricking it and having to make as many announcements as possible in order to placate their viewers.

The sad fact is though that when masses of their viewers hop it over to BT Sport when they take over the rights to the Champions League then cuts will inevitably have to be made.

And the minority sports will be the first to suffer.

I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying.

Sky's viewing figures for the Champions league aren't over astounding for the games involving non British clubs.

Talking to Mark Moore, he thought this was an excellent result that would bring a huge amount more money into the sport - in the future, mind. Does not help us much right now of course, where we still need every penny we can get, for a good while yet.

It seems clear now that the 8+8+8 business is part and parcel with all this, and must surely have been integral to the new deal? And I suspect the value quoted by Mat is there or thereabouts. Do the maths...

McManus has said today that this deal will remove the threat of insolvency from clubs in the future (if only not now...) presumably since it should provide a much bigger fixed base income in future.

In future... we need to get there of course, and with the huge amount OK wants back (that was only loans when he did nothing to stop folk assuning it was investment) and the legacy of the Whitcu*t madness plus only half the Sky money this year, its very much the labours of Sisyphus for us this year still.

Sky have told the analysts and the market - or those have concluded - that they are spreading their coverage across a wider spread of sports in reponse to BT's aggressive assault on what was their core soccer market. The RFL have almost certainly been in a position to take serious advantage of this. If it IS £40m p.a. that is one hell of a hike for a "minority" sport supposedly in terminal decline. I'm getting close to saying "well done RFL". This will never do!

I just wish we were able to move forward this season without the legacy of the last season - which, whatever it might have been on the park, was clearly a disaster financially. It is one hell of a financial handicap for us.

I am a BT internet customer. And I find soccer boring as hell. So it is REALLY hacking me off that I am paying for soccer through their charges. Does NOTHING for me whatsoever. So it is far from impossible that Sky, who I sacked off for most of their package a year ago, might be hearing from me again shortly, and I might soon come heir to a set of sky email addresses (and re-subscribe to Sky Sports) and bollox to BT. And I bet I would not be the only one. Seems a win-win for Sky to me, in the RL fraternity?

What huge amount does he want back? I haven't heard this mentioned. We know about the shares dispute, but that didn't involve the club directly since MM and RW were buying OK's shares? And in the press reports OK has been very clear that he was pursuing only individuals, and had made no claim against the club?

Also, when did we sign this Sisyphus, and is he any good?

His loans to the club. The lowest figure I have seen stated is £600k, and I have seen much higher numbers bandied about. Remember Whitcu*t telling everyone in the press that OK would be paid back every penny? Was easy for him to say, of course - given the, er unconventional sources of finance he seemed good at coming up with. They must be big numbers whatever, since we were told the club lost £1.2m and started with nil in the bank.

And as for Sisyphus, waste of space that guy. Never makes any real yards, goes backwards as much as he goes forwards and never gets anywhere.

The new deal appears to be an improvement on the last and offers some degree of certainly over the coming years for the game.

However I am not sure I would go as far as to say to guarantees no more financial problems at clubs, as like the big football deals as the TV money goes up so do the agents fees and salary demands ( especially as the talent pool of players is as we know already limited). Most of us will know from experience if you get a pay rise you tend to spend up to it so there is no more money left at the end of the month.
As Adey says it puts even more pressure on 2014 as we scrabble to keep the Bulls seat on the top table.

Absolutely agree with NR - I think McManus is a bit unwise to suggest it will prevent clubs going bust in future, for precisely the reason NR says.

And I see Martyn Sadler has big big concerns about the relegation scramble inciting clubs at risk to go for the quick fix in 2014 of spending far too much that they simply do not have (like Bradford City did a decade ago). I can't see our new owners going down that route - as Medley said on Wednesday, they are the first owners he has ever worked under who know how to and do say "no" - rather than say "yes" and then be unable to deliver - but who knows the pressures that may be on the owners of other clubs at risk?
