Talking to Mark Moore, he thought this was an excellent result that would bring a huge amount more money into the sport - in the future, mind. Does not help us much right now of course, where we still need every penny we can get, for a good while yet.
It seems clear now that the 8+8+8 business is part and parcel with all this, and must surely have been integral to the new deal? And I suspect the value quoted by Mat is there or thereabouts. Do the maths...
McManus has said today that this deal will remove the threat of insolvency from clubs in the future (if only not now...) presumably since it should provide a much bigger fixed base income in future.
In future... we need to get there of course, and with the huge amount OK wants back (that was only loans when he did nothing to stop folk assuning it was investment) and the legacy of the Whitcu*t madness plus only half the Sky money this year, its very much the labours of Sisyphus for us this year still.
Sky have told the analysts and the market - or those have concluded - that they are spreading their coverage across a wider spread of sports in reponse to BT's aggressive assault on what was their core soccer market. The RFL have almost certainly been in a position to take serious advantage of this. If it IS £40m p.a. that is one hell of a hike for a "minority" sport supposedly in terminal decline. I'm getting close to saying "well done RFL". This will never do!
I just wish we were able to move forward this season without the legacy of the last season - which, whatever it might have been on the park, was clearly a disaster financially. It is one hell of a financial handicap for us.
I am a BT internet customer. And I find soccer boring as hell. So it is REALLY hacking me off that I am paying for soccer through their charges. Does NOTHING for me whatsoever. So it is far from impossible that Sky, who I sacked off for most of their package a year ago, might be hearing from me again shortly, and I might soon come heir to a set of sky email addresses (and re-subscribe to Sky Sports) and bollox to BT. And I bet I would not be the only one. Seems a win-win for Sky to me, in the RL fraternity?
