Very good news. With half backs in such short supply, this is a great signing for the Bulls. Would like to see Bates signed up next

Good to see a young lad signing up. , hoping we start to sign bates , Roberts and mellor on longer deals too along with conroy impressed me this year when had to come in

Only seen him a few times but he looks like a useful player. If we do go down, he might find himself first choice HB pretty quickly!

If we go down, I'd guess quite a few will have to leave/take a haircut just to get under the Championship cap.

Thing is though, with two teams going down and zero teams going up you have to wonder just where it will leave a few players. On a one off basis we'll have two squads of professional players looking for, probably, non-existent vacancies. Maybe two or three of ours have already got 'provisional' deals, but I reckon a lot would to struggle, so maybe we'd retain more than many think. How many will remain as full-time pros would maybe another matter.

Are teams in the championship - such as Leigh - semi-professional clubs through choice to be able to fit under the cap? Or is it simply because the funds aren't there to go fully pro?

If relegated we would actually get more central funding than this year. The cap at £1m is the issue. So if it were me I would put the money into seasoned full timers in the pack and half backs, and the rest can be sprightly skillful preferably own grown youngsters with the ambition to play SL. And championship clubs will get more funding, perhaps as much as £400k more for the top club. So there will be opportunities at the top of the championship for relegation cast offs, but also for surplus players from the production line academies, ie Wigan Saints Warrington Leeds etc. that previously championship sides could not afford.So the second envelope that Ferres is working on is an interesting one.

Funds and cap at the moment, but see my previous post about next season where there could fully professional at the top of the championship and semi professional at the bottom due to funding (central funding for the bottom end up to £150k from about £90k at present. Thats why Featherstone are going for it this season with loans like Crookes etc.
