O/T Pubs in Bradford : Wed Jul 30, 2014 3:43 pm
Right, I haven't lived in Bradford for nearly 20 years, but I'm coming up in August for some serious drinking (and possibly a football match).

Where's good, these days? Should I still look no further than The Fighting Cock - does anybody know what time it opens - or are there any other decent places serving proper ale (apart from The Corn Dolly, I won't be in the right colours that day) not a million miles from VP.

Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cosy, doesn't try it on.

The Sparrow (North Parade) is a good bet, and Al's Dime bar a little further down too (for a change). I haven't been into the Beehive for a while, but if you've not been back for 20 years I'm sure you will find that nothing has changed in there....

There's some great real ale pubs in and around Saltaire, all within walking distance of each other (which can't really be said for the ones in Bradford) including the Boathouse (nice but pricey), Fannys Ale House, Shipley Pride, the Fox and the Junction too. We generally start there and then end up in Bradford later in the day. Although its nor far by taxi to VP either.

Corn Dolly often has visiting fans in. In fact the Gaffer has had commendations from branches of various clubs' fan bases, thanking the pub for the welcome. I go in there on many an early Saturday afternoon and the 'craic' between the fans is a credit to them all - and never any sign of 'bother', whatever shirt you wear!

Excellent, thanks. I always felt a bit unwelcome in there, even though we were supporting City. I suppose it could have been my student clothes and Southern accent that did it.

There's one City fan who [I believe] comes from Brighton and is a regular in the Dolly before most if not all home games [think he lives in the midlands now] and he has a southern accent you could cut with a knife...

If you want the freshest approach to pubs in Bradford - follow the first paragraph here - these two bars are spot on and definitely not crusty.

Not sure if its still open - but on the same row is City Gent (former Yorkshire Penny Bank) - thats worth a visit to see the inside alone, never mind the beer!

Don't forget to visit the Sweet Centre at the end of the day :)

It still has the look and feel of a Soviet-era psychiatric ward.
