++++ JOHN WOODS - statue +++ : Mon Sep 07, 2015 11:04 am
A local group of Leigh fans have got together to raise funds to erect a statue of John Woods on the LSV site. The council have confirmed their support too.
The group hope to raise around £30000 to get the statue erected. As you know, John is probably the most gifted player to have worn the Leigh jersey in their 120 year history. When John made his Leigh debut back in 1976, he became the 858th player to have played for Leigh. To date 1399 players have now done this. John is in the top 5 points scorer in rugby league and played for Bradford, Warrington & Rochdale before ending his career back at Leigh in 1991. John served as a player for Bradford Northern and earned the respect from the supporters for his talents. The first event has been organised by fan Paul Hardman who is going to cycle to each of the clubs John played for. Starting at the LSV on Saturday 26th September at 6am, Paul, along with other supporters (including past players Andy Fairclough, Ian Lewis, Simon Warhurst, Dave Bradbury, Bryan Gelling, Tony Cottrell, Simon Knox + more to confirm) will take the route to Warrington, then over the Pennines to Bradford, back over the Pennines to Rochdale and cycle back to Leigh. If you would like to take part in the whole ride - or just part of it, please contact Louise Carpenter louise.c73@outlook.com A just giving page has been made for those wanting to donate: https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/JOHN-WOODS-STATUE Please help to spread the word - follow on twitter: @WoodysStatue or search on Facebook for 'John Woods Statue'. |
