Richard Dunns listed building! : Tue Apr 05, 2022 6:11 pm
Just reported in the T&A, Richard Dunns has just been given grade 2 listed status.
Does this put the kibosh on any possible plans?
Would have been demolished 2years ago if not for the dreaded C word!

Come on.... everyone knows what happens to listed buildings in Bradford when the owner can't get permission for them to be demolished.

All that paraffin and firewood that's been stored there inexplicable for the last 5 years will spontaneously combust and the building will be declared structurally unsound and unsafe necessitating immediate demolition

As someone pointed out to me once that's gone up the concrete and steel that makes up the place isn't very flammable unfortunately.

While I'm a fan of preserving interesting architecture I'm not sure what those behind listing the place hope to achieve here. It'll be "at risk" within a few years as nobody has any money to put into its upkeep and I can't think of anything that will want to move into it or re-purpose it. In the end it'll be another decaying eyesore with weeds growing out of it. Just what Bradford needs.

As for any possible stadium development "plans" I think they're filed with all the others under "pie in the sky".

We need to come up with a way to afford to play at Valley Parade.

When you think the Odeon was refused listed building status this decision on Richard Dunn beggars belief.

I think it's equally as iconic as Odsal. Both acceptable in their prime, and both are currently brutalist dumps that need tearing down.

...i'm just very narrow minded!!!!!!!

I totally understand that there is a genuine need to preserve certain buildings which have a historic meaning to a community, but what fails to be recognised is whether the building can be repurposed and at what cost.

The facility was not financially viable for the LA as a leisure facility to the extent that they were prepared to pay millions for a new site and build. This alone should set alarm bells ringing.

If the system of listing buildings worked correctly, funding should be made available to recognise the high costs for maintaining and operating such a site, but instead it will now likely sit derelict for the next 10-15yrs costing taxpayers money to secure the site. Utterly stupid!!!

My only hope is that the city wins its bid for City of Culture status as IMO this is the only way that Bradford will be able to raise funding to regenerate the area.

As an architect myself it’s a building which under different circumstances should be preserved but common sense has to prevail as it will be left to fall apart as the council won’t put any money in to it. Wonder if this will impact Woods “big plan” of taking over
