Re: Future of SL : Sat Mar 17, 2012 6:38 pm
Can't understand the negativity in this thread, this season SL seems more popular than ever with TV audiences up massively, more media coverage and good crowds (considering we are in an economic downturn and SL ticket prices are higher than ever)

yes there are still too many one-sided games, but only last week we had bottom club Widnes beating Wigan, a few weeks back Catalan looked dead and buried against Saints and came back famously to win...results like that weren't happening in SL 5 or so years back.

Paramatta were awful. Titans v storm looks a blowout but for 60 mins they were highly competitive. It wasn't like they were 20+ plus down at ht

Tigers just made way too many errors v the dragons. The dragons were much improved from the week before while the tigers performance levels dropped. The key difference with the nrl is even the top sides can't turn up and be @ 70 - 80% and still win comfortably.

But that was the scoreline

Cowboys were equally as bad as the Eels last week When they got nilled at home.

I do wonder whether these would be popping up in quite this way if Saints weren't going through a rough patch :o

I did think that when I posted this.
Ive never hated to watch saints play, but at the moment they are just terrible to watch (truely shocking)

The quality of reffing in the NRL is a lot better as well, but i suppose having 2 refs you should think so.

Ive never watched NRL as much as this year, mainly to watch the English boys but I think Ive started to watch SL a bit different now.
At times its worlds apart.

I'm worried that the so called 'weekly rounds' mean nothing according the Eddie & Stevo.
Why bother going !

Good ol' negative RLFans.

Why do these people get involved with the game if they're so sure it's crap?!

I think the biggest problem Rugby League has is the negativity of some of its 'fans', how do you expect to introduce new fans and promote the game when you have a few people slagging off every single thing the game does.
Events like Magic Weekend and The Exiles would be universally happily accepted and successful in football, in Rugby League people just want to belittle and criticise these unique events.

Agree with you mate. RL is THE Greatest Game but its fans are sh**. Why do you you think the game has stagnated for over a 100 years. No one can see beyond their own team. The game can go to H**l as far as they are concerned as long as their own small town club can chugg along in SL. As has already been refered to if we are to raise the quality of the players we need to increase the player pool available which means expansion of the game to cities like Coventry Birmingham and another London team with the RFL development teams working alongside the SL clubs there in the schools, setting up and helping amateur clubs and making it a truly National game. Sky will pay more money for it and we may stop the player drain.

The Aussies will beat us most years because they just have so many quality players than us coming through because of the numbers playing. Thanks (now) to the RFL development officers, a lot of amateur enthusiast and the broncos that player pool is being increased down south but will i suspect go into reverse if the Broncos fail. To get more players we need to expand to the cities like i said.
Wont happen though.

Events like Magic Weekend

Oh, you mean an event like Magic Weekend which was introduced in order to showcase, promote and introduce the sport to a wider audience outside of the traditional RL areas? Well, that worked well didn't it? So well in fact that it's now ended up in Manchester and the stadium will still be less than half full! Super League supporters of the world unite! You've nothing to lose but your M62.

and The Exiles

Given the acute disinterest in promoting international rugby league unless the Aussies agree to play us in the UK, I guess it makes sense to create a bullshit alternative. Our very own 'unique' substitute version of State of Origin! At least that way, the game over here never has to contemplate undertaking any tours to New Zealand, PNG or the Pacific Islands to play any proper internationals does it?

Nope, I doubt that anyone in soccer would be interested in creating a unique alternative to the sundry international programme of events they already have, and they certainly don't need any Magic Weekend in order to showcase the sport to a wider audience since they already have that audience well and truly sewn up, just in case you hadn't noticed.

Re: Future of SL : Sun Mar 18, 2012 1:47 pm
Really? Because in the last few years attempts have been made to introduce a 39th game to the Premiership season and to play these games in various countries USA, Australia, China etc. Can't of been that stupid an idea if football is trying to go the 'extra game, new area' way too.
Difference is football fans will turn out in numbers at ridiculous prices for anything whereas Rugby fans would rather avoid reasonably priced events so they can come on here and tell everyone how much better the game was 1962 instead.
