NORTHERN Pride coach Andrew Dunemann has paid a huge compliment to the visiting Papua New Guinea Kumuls, choosing his strongest available side for this afternoon's pre-season trial.

Well the Kumuls got walloped 38-8. Not a good effort by them even though a some of their best players were unavailable having taken up overseas contracts. Team selection didn't help as the majority came from Port Moresby whose two teams performed dismally in the local competition last year.

a png tea in the nrl has to be the ultimate goal, but at the moment theyd probably be just about right for queensland cup. problem with that is the cost of travel etc.

NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......

: Tue Feb 17, 2009 2:10 pm
A Q'land cup team operates on around $1mill budget. Add travel costs and you would be nearer $1.5milll. That's a heck of a lot of money for a PNG team to raise.

Back in the time of the Super League war a Port Moresby side did compete in the Queensland comp. That was when money was being thrown around everywhere and the ARL was trying to buy some loyalty from PNG. The side performed creditably at home but dismally away. Once the Super League war finished the PNG team was as welcome as a jobbie in a swimming pool due to its cost and was quickly dropped. They did show what was possible though.

Until a stadium to meet the minimum standards required is built then unfortunately nothing will happen. At the moment this is nothing more than political grandstanding as stadiums don't get built quickly, which is a pity as a PNG team would be a big asset to both the NRL and the game in PNG.

Maybe the best way forward would be for a PNG side to be based in Oz and play in the Queensland Cup - it would be an avenue for PNG-originating players to develop further and a stepping stone towards NRL.

However, I reckon a second Nz franchise is more likely than a PNG one - for one thing there is the money.
