I don't see why not. It is not entirely pointless. It could be used as a friendly and also as a "competitive" game per se for players to get themselves up for in order to assess their capability of performing in intense games pre the SL season. I'm sure both teams will want to win it. Both teams will be competitive. Fans could get behind it. It's the first bragging rights of the season.
It's not exactly "one more game", because it could just replace a friendly at the end of the day and be used as another friendly, but with a trophy attached. It doesn't have to be on a par with the GF or even a SL game, it just has to be more interesting than a usual friendly and try and gain more interest than most to begin being successful, which I think it would easily achieve. And it is marketable. Could even get it on BBC or something for cheap if pushed right.
Whether they should take it outside the heartlands I'm not sure, but that's another question. I would support its inclusion definitely. It's more significant than a friendly, which is what it would be replacing, so therefore wouldn't be pointless. Just not very significant.
