Why settle for mediocrity?
I can't argue the BBC are good because they're not, but I will try and argue a case for accepting their poo efforts as long as RL remains free to air and gains exposure to the masses. Yes they give us a flat cappers image and yes the RFL need to address this by stipulating standards in the coverage even if it costs us in the pocket.
In australia the AFL insisted that a condition of their Channel 7 contract rights was that they also had to show the same games live into Sydney and Brisbane where AFL was non-existant.
For years, Channel 7 probably had terrible ratings in Brisbane/Sydney, but they now sell out their games.
RL still gets 10 times the crowds and ratings in Sydney than aussie rules does, but its growing fast. Kids now have the option to play AFL in Sydney and Brisbane.
Exposure is the key to growth, we should never EVER allow RL to fall off terrestrial TV, even if it hits us in the pocket by accepting a lesser deal than SKY offer.
