The web experience isnt much better. The adverts i can cope with but you cant mark all forums read (gives a maintenance message and then does the exact opposite) and i oftenget errors when trying to quote

I helped to run a few music related forums many moons ago (in the age of cgi-perl) and something is definately broken

Yeah. I can imagine that would happen on a 20 year old Nokia. Get a decent phone. I have a decent phone and have literally never experienced anything like you have just posted.

A website making a smartphone heat up? Yeah ok.

iPhone 12 iOS 17.3, and this website gives it aids. The framework of this website hasn’t been updated in over decade. There’s your problem.

Maybe we should all put in a fiver a year for each username we have on here. That should cover costs.

Have you got a spare 2 grand lying around LeBron?

Ok, I will answer questions about the framework of the site, but not the adverts as I don't look after that side of things.

The site is built on the same product we started the site on almost 25 years ago, so it is wholly out of date and vast in its size, it was an off the shelf product and we have got a bit stuck with it over the years. I have, as best as possible, massaged the site to keep it alive throughout that period and added custom written functionality, like the like system, the right column of tables and the customised profiles, themes for clubs etc......

I have rewritten the site almost entirely into a more lean and customisable version already, it is about 70% done. As you can imagine writing things like this takes a lot of time, and I work full time as well and am the only tech person on the site who can do any code whatsever.

I am hoping that in the new year we migrate to the new setup, it will look almost exactly like the current one to begin with, then I can mold it into the things we need and hopefully leave the bugs behind or fix them quickly.

But all this takes time and I am pretty short of that.

If the site earned enough money to employ me I would do it all now, but it doesn't come anywhere near and it is a labour of love.

I am always keen to know peoples experiences on the site and its usability, so please send them into me paul@rlfans.com or paul.coward@rlfans.com and we will do our best to fulfill them in the new site version or fix them here.

Thanks Paul.
Just to further clarify, my OP wasn’t one of moaning about the usability or the existence of adverts - I completely get the need for the latter.
I was just wondering if there was an alternate to the URL I was using (such as an app I hadn’t noticed or discovered).

Your hard work is appreciated and it would be a shame to ever be without this forum. Bugs & adverts or not.

There are links to mobile apps on the burger menu at the top.

All critism is accepted here, no issues, we may not act upon it though ;)

Ignore the trolls mate. If they were that bothered they would put their hands in their pockets.

Wouldn’t mind but have you Salford’s website? It’s like a load of primary school kids designed it

That seems a weird thing to say.

I wasn't under the impression that the site needed financial support. In fact, I was under the impression that the site had donated four figure sums to charities and through sponsorship on several occasions?

I used to regularly give financial support to the Leeds board when it was SouthStanders.com, but I don't think I've even seen any requests since it was merged with RLfans.

We don't grift, we have ads that produce enough revenue to keep up rolling along, we have donated money to charities and RL clubs all through our history and will continue to do so as we seem fit.

I think the poster was suggesting that people who block ads should be ignored, but we don't really have a policy over that, it is up to the users.

If we did have more income then more could be done, via marketing and promotion, but we aren't in RL Chat for the grift, just as a place for people to air their views, as long as we keep that going and enough people allow ads we will continue, if enough people block ads, we will end up stopping.
