Tight defences mean that you have to be very good to use it. Darren Lockyer used to very good at it, but I'm not sure he's got the pace these days to recollect.

There’s also the element of risk, which today’s coaches would prefer not to take if possible. A 40-20 is less risky and therefore preferable. Sad really because the chip kick is one of the game’s great moves.

a very delicate kicker could become very valuable . in this day an age . there is alot of open space .i mean 5 too 10 metre short little grubbers or chips .could be used alot more than they are now .when you have good look . im watching the souths rabbitohs vs the parramatta eels now this game is going flat out . very fast end too end 6 all at the moment

It has been used several times in the NRL in the last week.
The Storm used a wide chip kick two or three times tonight.

wigan scored a good try against us in pre season with it and we got a good try against Hull this season doing it. It is not dead and not a waste of time if used sparingly and exceuted well you will see it still used. I think we have used it every game this season. sometimes works sometimes doesnt. That is Why Nathan Brown is a good coach who gives our players the opportunity to express their indaviduality

yes its all about safety 1st . when you see most the time .its 5th tackle .they put in a kick too the sideline .the winger is waiting.but in the middle field there so much open space . andrew johns was the best kicker i have ever seen . he use mix it up so much .all his teamates knew which kick he was doing aswell.they scored so many trys from his kicking . bannana kick. grubbers. chips. cross field punts. bombs.

I think the defensive line moving from 5 to 10 metres made this one a bit rarer, Hudds v Hull scored their last try using the chip and regather though so its still out there.

On a similar note, I see wingers are far less prepared to kick ahead these days too, a lost art I think.

Was that the hodgson try, the first of the game? If so i wouldnt call it a chip kick as meant in the first post, plus it was only a fumble that turned it into a try!
