Troubled Sydney Roosters five-eighth Todd Carney has been released from his contract with the NRL club.

The Roosters released a statement late on Thursday afternoon saying Carney had sought a release from the final year of his deal.

"Following a request from Todd Carney and his manager David Riolo, the Sydney Roosters have agreed today to release Todd from the final year of his contract with the club," the statement read.

"This outcome has been mutually agreed and we believe it is the best result for all parties.

"We wish Todd well in his future endeavours."

Carney had been sanctioned by the club three times in 2011 for alcohol-related off-field incidents.

It's a shame such a clearly talented player can't stay off the sauce.

Can't see many NRL clubs willing to take a chance on him, despite his ability and it's unlikely he'd be able to get a SL gig due to him already failing to get a work permit last time.

Good chance he'll end up at Catalan if no other NRL club want him.

Pity his move to the Giants in 2009 was blocked by the Borders Agency.

His agents confident he can get a uk visa.

Should that be the case Widnes have been linked and would have the space and more importantly cash to bring him over.

FWIW I think Gadaffi has more chance of a visa unfortunately.
