Its a well known fact that the WRU were on their way to the historic meeting in Huddersfield in 1895 but were prevented from attending by poor weather (snow).Had they attended they would have switched to League but in the days after the meeting a desrate ERU cut a deal with the Welsh to keep them in Union.
It's interesting to think how League would have faired had the Welsh switched back in 1895, with a larger geographical spread and the possibility of the Irish following their Welsh Celtic cousins, League could have had a much bigger base from which to progress. At the same time the English Union would have been prevented from launching the 4Ns and would have been denied the Welsh contingent in the Lions teams.
