There is a club in Limerick called Treaty City Titans who came 2nd in the Irish league last year, plus the ground is there and presumably a backer given the article. It is normal for new RL pro clubs to be built from nothing, so that's not an issue if the money's there

I think you need to be a bit more realistic in your explanations, when they're looking at joining the Championship 1 that should be their aim, not SL straight off

Where is this magical club, who are its backers?

Celtic have been built on the top of Bridgend RU club and Celtic Warriors. Catalan is pretty much UTC, a club founded by St. Esteve and Catalan XIII. From what I have seen there is no existing club or organisation that actually wants this club to exist. Surely until we actually find out if there is a backer to this new club it is surely all pie in the sky.

Don't get me wrong i am for a team in Ireland but this all sounds like fiction to me.

agrred. surely any irish club would have to come out of the irish league with the ultimate aim of having the existing irish clubs supplying them with players.

That would be the aim. I do not believe that Irish Rugby League has the teams to back that sort of team at present. I had a sniff around and even though there is an article in the irish times about limerick.

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/spo ... 93111.html

There are also people in Ireland who share my views

http://rli.ie/topic,173,0,Realistic-Ide ... RLI#latest

The thing that Ireland Rugby League now is establish there existing teams and look to expand their competition. This would be a long term goal with a national league team being a long distance off.

That's pretty much word for word the article which started this thread …

what on earth is unrealistic about expecting a club which aims to get to SL having a plan to get there,

if they dont aim to get to SL then thats fine, they can go be a championship club, good luck to them

but if they are aiming to be an SL club, and dont plan on staying in the championship for an extended period of time, yet still dont have a plan for getting from where they are to where they need to be then it is preposterous to let such an unprepared and rudderless ship into any level of pro/semi pro RL, not having a coherent long term plan is indicative of poor management, and exactly what the flatcappers have spent the last 5 years moaning about

Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity

Just to avoid confusion Starbug is the username of Steven Pike

SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

But how can they plan for SL when they don't know what life in the Championship has in store for them? What is the point in drawing up a plan to be in SL in 10 years if they struggle in the Championship? Surely they should concentrate on becoming a successful Championship club, consolidate their competitiveness, and then draw up plans when the time comes?

Unless they're being backed by a multi-millionnaire like Celtic, I see little point in them worrying about SL for a long time, and planning for it would be a waste of time and paper. There are so many things that could happen between now and then it would be pointless. Resources would be best spent in other areas.

The death of quality journalism. :(

They do actually seem quite different one has Kelly saying it would be nice to have an Irish team and the other is an article on the development of a limerick sporting village.

They are the same in that both are probably a load of rubbish made up on the spot.

The second link is the important one out of the two I posted. Which actually has someone from Ireland who is involved with the game talking about the reality of what is going on over there. Rather than a bunch on englishmen dreaming or an irish football team trying to get some grant money.
