As Super League is a competition including Enlgish, Welsh and French teams it should be a maximum of five players in your squad who aren't English, Welsh or French. Whether players from other European nations should be exempt from the quota list is something that should be looked into.

The RFL fought the law and... well tbh they got a draw. But they need to know their limits and not raise expectations that turn out to be unrealistic. Or perhaps they were right to be ambitious - by aiming high they may achieve their goal sooner, if not as soon as they'd have liked. Any player that was going to get an exemption has got it already, so if they hold fast they'll get what they want in the not too distant.

They're trying to change things and that always leads to unintended consequences. Reducing reliance on overseas players doesn't just mean young players will be given a shot. Older players careers are being extended. See the two year deals for Meli, Fielden and Radford.

It is a truism that people and organisations respond to incentives not appeals to their conscience. Is it within the rules? Yes. Is it within the spirit of the rules? That is open to interpretation and that interpretation will reflect our biases. Do I feel like somebody justifying minimising their tax bill or asking for a small paycut to keep their child benefit? Yes - but no worse than that.

The five player rule I suggested would need to be brought in over say three or four years. Implementing it right now would throw up all kinds of problems eg exisiting 'non-quota' player contracts.
I know something in a similar vein has already been put forward and to a certain extent applied by the powers that be, but it fathers a lump of Swiss cheese. If clubs were told that by the start of the 2015 season they could have the said five 'non quota' players they would be able to plan ahead with regard to development, recruitment and contracts.

Fair enough - but to be legal we need the fig-leaf of fed-trained, rather than anything about nationality. As far as the EU and certainly the UK is concerned anyway.

If a club found a 16-year old EU player and brought him through the system, he couldn't ever be put on any sort of quota.

Not if he's over his injury and isn't played out of position.

If Reardon's played at Full back he'll do okay.

Pryce to Bradford still a possibility

When you're a Bradford fan there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.

Unfortunately it's usually an oncoming train

The trouble with the fed-trained thing is that a player like Ian Henderson, who was born and raised in England until his family moved to Australia is counted as a quota player, yet Robbie Paul isn't. So what you have is an English man who needs a quota to play SL and a former international kiwi who can play without the need of a quota spot.

I think the Henderson's got exemptions from the new reg's so do not count as Quota\overseas players. I imagine if Widdop ever plays in SL he would get a similar exemption.

You'd hope so, otherwise it makes a bit of a mockery of the whole thing as an idea to help produce more english players
