If Rugby League were a psychiatric patient, the diagnosis would be simple: chronic status anxiety.

Even when the code is strong, some calamity or crisis has always been nigh.

gallop himself added to it.

last year the code was at a high with the centenary celebrations and origin getting the biggest ratings ever

at that moment with the game riding a high gallop came out with quotes that sydney clubs were about to go broke.

he also last year justified AFL getting more money from TV companies than RL despite RL having more viewers.

there are quite a few things that people arent happy with gallop about.

if the next TV deal isnt an increase of $80 - $100 million pa he has to be sacked

is it true that league (some in aussie league) thought they had got themselves a cracking tv deal only for afl to come out a short while after that dwarfed it?

Masters as usual hits the nail on the head.

Doomsayers everywhere.

2008 was a wonderful year for rugby league, although you wouldn't have known it from some of the rubbish written...

The AFL's TV deal was a special situation with Kerry Packer forcing his opposition to pay way over the money - effectively from the grave. He was a canny businessman as they say.

pretty true.

i thought he had gotten enough beforehand anyway

AFL gets around double what RL get and RL gets more viewers for its broadcasters.

its around $90 million difference

so when the next deal comes up surely the nrl should go for a similar deal to the afl!

NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......

: Tue Feb 17, 2009 1:50 pm
The massive difference though is attitude. Gallop comes out and says the TV deal RL got is fair and justified as we are not a "national" sport. Roughly the same time the AFL come out and say how they will be looking for a $1bill deal when the rights come up for renogotiation as they have plans to expand the comp!

Tell me who is likely to get the best deal?

Gallop is a hypocrite! He talks the game down more than most, the Sydney going broke fiasco was just the latest in a long line!

AFL will get more money than they get now.

if we dont get at least what they are getting now then Gallop has to go.

imagine what $90 million could do?

you could have 2 new teams in the nrl - $8 million
$30 million for juniors and development officers
and $50 million to raise the salary cap ie $3.5 million extra per club taking the salary cap to $7 million

at that level our top players would be on well over $1 million which would stop all players going to union

indeed with that kind of money we would take over in NZ as well

the NRL has lived off poor TV deals since 1998. when it gets a good deal look out

he started off well but then has faded as youve said above

i still reckon hes a good leader and hes working on lots of stuff like futuer TV deals.

he has taken us forward ie raised the salary cap and brought in the gold coast (and souths)

the next TV deal is the key

i believe hell nail it
