The opportunity to challenge a decision? : Sat Dec 10, 2011 9:50 pm
It's been done in other sports and talked about for RL but would it do any good?

For example, each team would be given 3 challenges and if they disagreed with the referee's decision they could ask for it to be looked at by the VR.

It'd end up causing more controversy.

If say Leeds challenged a decision and it looked 50/50 and the call is overturned everyone knows what people are going to say. I mean they can't even get video ref decisions correct at the minute so lets wait for that to be perfect before implementing more decisions for them into the game.

And a final reason why it wouldn't work in RL...the video ref isn't at all SL games.

No. The game will live with the odd incorrect call as it has done from the off.

As Gronk says, some will still see it as a correct call and others as an incorrect call & the flaw that is having video replay at only televised games makes it lopsided anyway.

That's something I've been told that the RFL aim to overcome some time in the future.

I think it could work. Just depends how they use it.

If you take away the option of the referee going to the video ref, and put the onus on the players to challenge decisions, then it takes a lot of pressure off the match officials and may even speed the game up.

For example, Team A score a try, the referee wants to give the try but a player from Team B challenges the decision. Video Referee called upon. No try. Team B still has their 3 challenges.
Or...
Team A score a try, the referee wants to disallow the try. Player from Team A challenges. Video Referee called upon. No try. Team A loses a challenge.

The same situation but with the referee having contrasting views. It will stop players trying to claim for everything and anything under the Sun if they're insignificant, because it won't be worth losing a "challenge" for if they've got it wrong. All it takes is the ref to say "do you want to challenge that?", them to say "no" and the ref to say "go away then!"

SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

The ref can tell them to go away already , so why change things for no reason ?

That's like saying the ref can overrule the right decision so why not get rid of the rules and do what ever he wants.

I can feel a sarcastic comment saying 'I thought they did this at the minute? My mistake' or something along the lines of that appearing from someone.

There are certain situations during matches that need a change of the rules to sort them out , but the bringing in of new rules just isn't necessary , all IMO of course , because thats what MB s are for aren't they
