I actually got 'Melt' before I got any Genesis stuff (and before scratch and car). I think I may have been a bit put off by Phil Collins' later solo stuff (or bought into the image of him being an annoying weirdo). But yeah, 8th July 2009, I got that album and listened to it religiously. Was one of those important purchases. I have listened to it more than any of the Genesis stuff and the other Gabriel albums. I have to agree with you too about it being close to perfection (or 'genius', as you say) and Bilko being the weakness. It isn't exactly unlistenable but it meanders a great deal and doesn't really fit in with the tone of the album. But the first side(on the vinyl) is just a series of great tracks, bookmarked by my favourites on the album ('Intruder' and 'Through the Wire')

What is your view on' Foxtrot'? I can see the improvement on 'Nursery Cryme' and I am personally a massive fan (Get 'em out by Friday' and 'Supper's Ready' are close to audio nirvana) but it isn't the completed article.

Foxtrot's a good album, after all, they were still learning their trade, but.....Supper's Ready IS THE GREATEST ROCK RECORD, EVER (in my humble opinion).

It's a great pity (for Genesis) that the punk era started. Some critics used to give them reasonable reviews, however, when punk started, the trendy music press decided to put the knife into them, because John Lydon told 'em to (incidentally, Lydon and Collins DO get on well with each other, contrary to popular belief).

Re Gabriel, jd.....So is another cracker, which is worth your attention.

Back on thread, good call for whoever brought up the name of Ginger Baker
Some of his drumming on that Cream reunion gig @ Royal Albert Hall was a joy to behold.
There was also a little known band called BBM, in which he teamed up with Jack Bruce (again) and Gary Moore. I've got a 2 minute video clip of them, and Baker doesn't miss a beat...quality.

Back on Neil Peart, this fella CAN drum. Each time Rush tour, I keep meaning to get a ticket, but never get round to it. I've not got a Rush album since around "Time Stand Still" circa mid-late 80's. Are they worth a buy?

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

WRONG it's all bland middle of the road sh!te.

Joey Jordison; when we saw Slipknot a few years ago my brother-in-law who has been drumming in bands for years and teaches the drums was astonished at how good he was and some of the things he is able to do.

Glad somebody has mentioned Ian Paice but strangely the name Keith Moon hasn't been brought up.

I stood behind Dave Grohl at the Hull KR game. I wasn't impressed really; he didn't join in for any song and spent most of the game slagging Myler off.

Neil Peart - the business.

Stewart Copeland was not too shabby either. Top drummer

I also love Clem Burke from Blondie albeit there was no variety in his drumming. It was flat out every track.

Load of bollox argument.

Gilmour wasnt a technically great guitarist but his tone and feel made him special. Malmsteen was so fast but fecking boring to listen to.
Some drummers are technically brilliant but totally overplay.
Now Steve Gadd played for the song.
Oh, someone mention Ginger Baker before. His drumming on the live performance of Spoonful on Wheels of Fire is just an orgasm.
