I don't think many on here are parents to pro sportsmen/women. I've got two lads who show little interest in playing sport, although I'm going to try and get one of them to a game or two this year, as he enjoys being at live games, and he's no longer working weekends. He's no interest in watching Wire on the telly. I might be lucky enough to have grandkids who have a sporting talent good enough to earn a living from it. I recon the pride in watching your child play and enjoy sport, at any level, would far outweigh the comments heard directed at them from other supporters. But I'm not in your shoes and will never know. This is something that I've never experienced, but I'm happy that my two have made their own choices, as I had no wish to push them into something that they weren't into. Have an enjoyable season, no matter what you both encounter or have to endure.

Let me get this straight, the concept being discussed here is that spectators cannot pass negative comments on a player's performance (own team or opposition) in case their parents/guardians/family are in earshot?

Does the same apply for written comments?

What about critique of referee, CEOs, sports commentators etc?

Just my opinions unless it's a FACT, in which case it's a fact.

No that is not what I was discussing.
The first point was that players have other stuff going on in their lives that can impact on perfornance, not suggesting they can’t be criticised.
The second point was as a parent it must be very difficult not to react to criticism abuse.
I didn’t think either point was controversial.

Fair enough. I think it is difficult for all parents if their child is criticized in whatever discipline. It is magnified when the child has a public role like a pro sportsman or MP etc.

General question - When does this become abuse though? Shouting "get him off the field" to a player that is putting in repeated poor performances - is that abuse? Remarking to a mate "Peter Matautia is crap isn't he" and being overheard - is that abuse?

personally, i'd say the line could be(and we've seen this in the last 2 seasons) me stood in the midst of the southstand complaining about matautia, as part of the throng is just noise.

The absolute weapons that go down to the ad boards 5 minutes before the end of the game so they can shout and yell specificly at individuals after the game, protected by the barrier/stewards is where it crosses the line, its happened way too much in the south stand and away games in 22 and the 2nd half of , and its the same 6-10 people who for the most part are actually quite easily identifiable. i imagine this is repeated in the other stands, or appears to have been, certainly with the incidents in 2022.

Yes I would agree that is crossing the line and measures should be taken against the individuals.

Yep. These individuals stop "normal" people attending games. We don't need them.
