When Penny and Riley came through at the same time there was probably only ever going to be room for one of them in the team with Hicks being at the club (and being the type of player who never gets injured). I used to think Penny was the one with pace and flair and Riley would be the steady eddie a la Dean Gaskell, so Penny was worth persevering with as the rough diamond who needed polishing up. Unfortunately for Penny, Riley turned out to be a good finisher as well and so it became hard to make the case for Penny over Riley.
I do think Penny is an SL player but he's probably going to struggle to get established at a top club because weak links get targeted and he would immediately be a target if we put him in the first team. At some clubs lower down the table the spotlight would be less intense, so he will have more of a chance to tighten up his game. I hope he goes well, he was certainly the most exciting young player that came out of our Academy for years. He gave us a lot of memories in the 2007 season.
