Re: Tonight’s game v Wakefield : Sat May 06, 2023 11:50 am
There were two very good individual tries, Thewlis' first try and Ashton's second (who could have had more if the ball had gone to him). I was impressed by Philbin and Bullock, who both ran the ball in hard and with purpose. We seemed to get slowed down again in the ruck, and need to improve the speed of our play the ball, our kicking game (where there's not enough height on them for us to compete for the ball, or for a chance of a knock on) and catching opponents kicks. I could not believe how many times a Wakey kick was allowed to hit the ground - really poor.

In the context of last season it's nice to get the two points, be nine from eleven and top of the league, but were far from the real deal on the evidence of our last three performances.

Agreed with the ruck speed, we need to work on being dominant in the tackle so the referee is more on our side.

Regarding the kicking games, if the attacking kicker aims where the defenders aren't then they have more chance of causing problems to the opposition. I know where most of our kicks are going so no doubt the opposition do as well. I think we need a little more variety by aiming for the biggest gaps rather than the corners to keep the defence guessing a bit more.

Even though it was nearly 50 years ago and the game has evolved, Murphy's kicking between Featherstone's winger and fullback was an excellent example of how to do this.

Erm, just asking for a friend, are we mathematically safe from relegation or do Wakefield need to lose another game?

I wasn’t suggesting we will be relegated by the way, it’s just after last season I want to know when i can relax (and breathe during a game).

Absolutely right. But I am concerned that our serial moaners might suddenly re-appear on the fallacy that it "helps the club to criticise". When we lose they all appear as if having their say on here will help the club. Powell's comments after the game indicates that he is well aware of our problems. Saints have lost 5 games, Wigan 3 and we have lost 2 ... so not too bad eh! But we aim high and we aim for the very best ... as you do.

A bit of constructive criticism is healthy, but moaning isn't. If we're halfway through our fixtures and top of the table, especially given last year's fortunes, and still finding stuff to moan about, it's a little concerning. To me, the problem sits with the person moaning more than it sits with the running and performance of Warrington Rugby League Football Club.

The world is far from perfect, so don't expect our club to be.

To give a bit of perspective saints have lost 3 more games than us already after only 11 games, but they will still win it. I know they're taking the losses with their usual good grace, but the point is, whether we are convincing or not at the moment won't win us the grand final, we need to earn enough points to get the right to try to contest for it and we are doing a good job of that so far.

Why are you concerned about "serial moaners"? It's an internet forum and we are a broad church. There will be diverse opinions so elebrate the diversity. :-)
