Excellent read. Got it for chrimbo.
When he got the accidental punch from his own prop (Stan Owen???) in a scrum at Rochdale was amusing. Told him to give up the head so he could knock out opposition hooker and hit Ashcroft too

The punch bouncing of his face into the opposing hookers face and getting him to you wouldn't get that in a footballers biography

Bought it for our Dave but he couldn't relate to it, but I enjoyed it.

Its not my era either so was difficult to have the "oooh I remember such and such player" etc. for me too. But the success at Leigh, and even reading how Wire got the 4 trophies in a season was good read

Far away from being my era and being able to relate to it but 'm still finding it a fascinating read

I didn't like the style of listing the teams every two minutes when it was bang in the middle of a story. I like stats but not in that sort of format. I felt it infringed too much on the book but there were undoubtedly some good stories in it and I would still recommend the book to anyone who remembers that era.

One of the best rugby books I read was the book on Andy Greg while Maurice Bamford's book on himself was a very good read too which is why again I was a little disappointed with the Kev Ashcroft book because Maurice's was such a good read.

TBH it is the first RL book I have read so may be why I am so hooked but I have only ever watched the modern era and as such never seen a competitive scrum other than maybe one when a team will push to win the ball evey 5 years.

It's that reason I am so interested the stories of the biff in the scrum and being allowed by the ref on most occasions when you can't fart in a scrum these days without being penalised!

If anyone can recommend any better RL books I would love to read them!

dean sampsons is a really good one as well

the "incident" with an aussie international is well documented, doesn't actually name the said player, but i know who he is, and he later played for a club in this counrty :WHISPER:
