Re: Wigan : Sun Mar 01, 2020 11:49 pm
As we suspected we have improved from last year but not by as much as we hoped.

No team will survive 10 minutes with 12 men if you concede four penalties and don’t touch the ball.

At 10-14 we were going in behind perhaps you could say undeservedly so but great try as it was you have to scratch your head and wonder where the full back was. At Salford the late burst by Sio was countered by Darnell being where he should have been.

Then to concede again off the back of a 40/20 within 2 minutes you could see the petrol pouring out of the tank.

It’s not the time to over criticise individuals but in that first 35 minutes once again our inability to turn pressure into points bit us up the back side.

35 minutes on top 10 pts 45 minutes on top 42pts.

It was noticeable down our left edge that as Sezer at times broke across the line, we seemed to lack the pace or failed to run the lines to go with him something that Wigan did really well to our cost.

With all due respect I expect to lose at Saints but at the start of the season I’d have taken 4/10 and we will likely go into the Cup with 6/10 so no panic just yet.....

the full back was in the defensive line because we were down to 12 men.....

I guess that's the point though - DM should not have been in the defensive line.

He should have held his normal FB position and the kick-off should have been into the corner.

It doesn't need 12 men to defend across the pitch from a KO.

First play the ball from the kick off the FB should have stayed back they went short side had the FB been in that side of the field he would have been able to get the winger when he slowed to pick up the ball or at least pressured the winger.

As the other ‘poster’ said there was no need for the full back to be in the defensive line with a minute or so to go to half time as the off the cuff kick play was the one we had to cover the alternate was a couple of passes and drive... Wigan would not have thrown a silly pass at that stage under their posts the chip over was almost a play to nothing.. brilliant for them as it came off but no risk if it didn’t

Got what we deserved today nothing, shows how much we already rely on sezer, as soon as he went off we collapse and our backsides fall out as we didnt have anyone leading, correct call too so no point whinging about the ref.
Credit to Wigan though they hammered us on the edges and full ydeserved their win.

Think all the media stuff about us not playing anyone yet and this been a proper test must have got to the players and made them question themselves very dissapointing after the superb 3 away perfomances

So would it be true to say that in your opinion your just a one man team, and will struggle without Sezer?

We would absolutely struggle without Sezer, We did struggle without him, and we need another hooker Simon.

Wigan were so much faster than us it was a bit embarrassing but they will beat most teams playing like they did, We managed to keep some of their danger men quiet for the most part but being honest we were completely shot by 60 minutes, still onward and upwards, bring on the Saints.

Re: Wigan : Mon Mar 02, 2020 2:08 pm
That last try of the first half was a planned move. After Hardacker had converted the previous try I saw him talking to the ref on his way back to half way. It was obvious he was asking how much time was left because the ref pointed to the game clock 2/3 times, there were 31 seconds left. Hardacker then had a quick glance at the winger and the rest as they say is history, this time it came off on any other day it might not have. With 13 men in the defensive line and 16-10 up the automatic choice is to drive it in for a couple and take the hooter. The winger had nothing to lose and good luck to him it came off this time. Doesn't excuse or explain what happened to the capitulation in the second half, every time Wigan had the ball I really 5hought they were going to score. Lots to be learned from this disaster.

Sezer cleared to play. Matagi has a one game ban.

We can analyse and dissect the game the rest of the week but it won't change anything
Bottom line their attack and defence were played at a pace much faster than ours and we just couldn't match it!
No amount of coaching or tactics can make a player "run faster" Sadly the sooner some fans accept that and stop taking cheap shots cos we lost to a better team on the day and we do the best with what we've got the better IMO
Personally was looking forward to a good close tussle but it wasn't to be! Just a bad day at the office - end of!
The true test of the teams resolve and backbone will be revealed Friday - but they'll still not be 100metre Olympians whatever happens! No substitute for natural pace!

Turned out as i feared, It would be the Wigan backs that skinned us for pace. That was so disappointing, We created plenty of chances first half up until Sezer went off, from then on we were just not up to it, That was a superb solo effort from marshal, don't know where the full back was.
Once again the hooker was completely shot on about 50 minutes ( not surprisingly ) and that didn't help at all, Still it tells us where we are in reality and not all teams are as good as wigan though the next game won't get any easier, Forwards didn't do too bad till the capitulation but early days yet, we will do better.

From what I have seen of Wigan this season so far it has been their best performance and not many sides would have beaten them on Sunday.
