In last week's League Express there was a letter from me about how mental health can affect players when they retire from playing, referees when they retire from refereeing and supporters generally as they grow old.
My own suggestion to help delay or stop this happening is to spend time writing a novel based broadly on your own life and covering tales from your family and family history, childhood, school days, employment, home town, and your connections with the sport of rugby league. Many people who I have said this to have said that this seems a good idea but went on to say that they would just not know how to even start it. For the benefit of such people I have also written three pages of advice. I am in quite a good position to do this because since starting to write my first novel called "One Winter" in 1988 I have now written over half a million words in six novels that stretch from 1961 to 2008. If you would like me to send you these sheets contact me at wgeofflee@gmail.com and ask for Geoff Lee's RL writing advice. If you just prefer to read one of my novels or give as a Christmas present I suggest "Three Good Years" with its background of Work, Family Life, Saving the NHS and Rugby League, then visit the web site of the publisher London League Publications at http://www.llpshop.co.uk, click on Books and then Fiction |
