Agree on Bevan at full back. Problem is Field can’t play anywhere but full back (if we agree he can’t defend at 6).

Last week was weird as we had 12 men but French didn’t get the ball in space like we need him too.

I think Field is a better attacking 6 than French and French is better attacking 1 than Field.

I’d like to try French defending on the wing, Field defending at full back then in attack playing full back and stand off.


Last thing I want is French playing wing, Cust is too out of a form.


The priority for the next 4 weeks is solving this puzzle.

We need to find a way of playing with two fullbacks when we're attacking, how I don't know but there must be a way.

I would have thought that incorporating a ball playing 13 into the spine would help with that?

I think them playing as 6 and 1 is fine and I'm happy for them to alternative which side they play on and who plays 6 and who plays 1. Our attack with those two swapping around in back play would be so dangerous as you'd have no idea who to mark. Saints have some similar plays with Lomax and Welsby and the defence has no idea which one will get the ball.

The problem is in defence and who defends at 6. I personally think Bevan is a better fullback in terms of kick defence, but I don't think I've seen Jai miss a 1 on 1 after a side makes a break. I do think though that Bevan is a better all round defender and defends miles better at 6 than Jai does.

Field at 1, French at 6 in defence.
Do what they want in attack.

I thought we ripped up Field at 6 a bit too quickly tbh. He had a mare in defence against Catalans but the whole side was way off. In saying that, I do think he’s extremely valuable at fullback because of how fit he is and he looks like he could play back to back games.

I just think we need to be patient. French looks a bit like he thinks he needs to play this conventional 6 role of passing and kicking but he just needs to settle and focus on his running game to start with and then build from there. I’m confident it’ll start to come together over this next few weeks.

Good win which puts us in a far better position but I find it difficult to be upbeat after that. Not keen on our attacking set up at the moment - its not clicking. French has gone from looking like the obvious Man of Steel to a bit part player. Lucky Salford were missing Croft, Ackers and Brierley in the 2nd half.
