I guess because it was not the main award players voted individually as they saw fit. I am also guessing from your post above you suspect there was a concerted and possibly coordinated effort from some clubs players to engineer the result?
Looking at it the other way it would not surprise me if all the Wigan players voted for Sam because he was a team mate which kind of defeats the object of the exercise.
I suppose as long as any system is open to be abused, it will be abused. That's just the reality of life.
But it's a sad state of affairs when first a panel of specially selected experts prove they can't be trusted to deliver a fair verdict (as in the Trent Barrett affair), then a panel of journalists prove they can't be trusted (as in the Lance Todd last season, when some clown actually voted for Danny Maguire), and then the players prove they can't be trusted (as in the current utterly laughable Man of Steel award).
God knows what the solution is.
