I agree 100% with this. If Goulding turns out to be the best of the bunch in training/pre-season then so be it.

Ill be very worried if thats the case though...

Why though? Because he scored a few tries 2 seasons ago. Goulding didn't shine at Salford on loan, he's never done anything to prove himself at Wigan, I can honestly say hand on heart he is the only winger I have actually never seen take a man on and beat him, his defence is average, he's bad under a high ball and he lacks pace for a winger. Are you seriously saying you would play Goulding centre next season? You must be, because if Charnley and Richards stay fit he doesn't get anywere near a wing spot. If Gelling is half as good as Carmont he immediately gets in before Goulding.

And please dont say you would play him on the wing and Charnley centre, our right side defence would be a turnstile.

2010 season Goulding scored 25 tries from 20 appearances and finished second highest try scorer of the season behind Pat Ricahrds but with a better try to game ratio. You can say Gleeson produced the tries but Goulding was still outstanding in attack that season and for that reason he deserves equal opportunities in the team as Gelling and Amos. Personally I would consider Amos and Charnley to partner up on the right side next season but that's dependent on Amos's performances pre season.

On the wing, yes. At centre, no.

He's had many, many chances at centre, and never looked remotely special imo. Centre is the one area of the pitch where genuine gamebreakers are becoming harder and harder to find, if you want a steady defensive minded player, 2nd rowers are better than slow wingers.

Fielden did well at a different position on the pitch in 2010, should we give him the same shout at centre as Gelling and Amos? They are different positions, as shown by the fact Paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat is awful at centre!

Amos Roberts would be a winger/full back out of position if he played centre! Charnley, Carmont and Gelling are the only out and out centre's we have but I feel Goulding could do a good job there if given the opportunity.

Charnley isn't a centre he's a winger, whereas Goulding is a centre rather than a winger, so really Goulding, Carmont and Gelling are the only out and out centre's we have. Although Gelling has played the last couple of years mainly at second row, so really it's only Carmont and Goulding who are out and out centres.

Charnley played a lot of centre in the reserves I thought?

Josh Charnley is a centre

Granted Charnley hasn't much experience at centre. But he's shown on a fairly regular basis that he can beat a man one on one, something I've never seen Goulding do. Just because Josh has little experience at centre doesn't mean he should be discounted for that position.

Goulding will more than likely start the season at centre and therefore have the first chance to cement the spot as his own. But should it not work out for Darrel then I wouldn't be worried about playing Charnley there what so ever.

Hardaker at Leeds has been given a centre spot for next year, after barely playing a full season at the top level, with most of his rugby having been played at FB or wing a division below.

Fingers crossed one of these lads can fill that centre spot, and not just by making up the numbers. Because come 2013 we're going to have to replace Carmont as well. The last thing we want is to head into the 2013 two centres down.

Re: Rumours and signings v8 : Fri Dec 09, 2011 6:36 pm
I wasn't discounting Charnley as an option at centre, just pointing out that it's not his natural position and he's only occasionally played in the centres.

Long term it could be his best position but next year will be his second season and we've all seen young players who have suffered a dip in form once they'd have that initial burst onto the scene in their first season. A bit of disruption might not be the best thing for him.

It all depends on performance on the pitch and in training. We might not be in the best situation when it comes to finding a permanent right centre but at least there are a number of options available. I imagine each option will be tested during pre-season or perhaps even at some point during the season.

I just hope some players are given support from fans rather than people searching high and low for every criticism possible. Tomkins and Charnley didn't half get a raw deal this year because many had made their mind up about Tomkins before he'd played a game at centre while any try down that side seemed to be blamed on the winger too.

Charnley spent the majority of his playing time before coming up to the first team as a centre, and played there whilst on loan at KR as well.
