Hang on a second there, your saying he never got picked for the first team at Wigan and therefore using that against him?

A. He was too young
B. He was not ready
C. There were established players playing in his position before him
D. Noble was in charge at that time and was notorious for not picking youngsters *AHEM* Sam Tomkins *AHEM*

I'm sorry but thats bloody ridiculous trying tio make out he's a bad RL player because he never played SL for Wigan. As for the RU aspect, I still maintain that some players are more suited to one code. Iain may well be one of those players.

That the same Sam Tomkins that Nobby picked from Rd3 of 2009?

Okay, so for you the judges are still out on his RL abilties, though as others have said, lots of the other Wigan lads are on college courses, and they don't seem to let it affect their on-field performances.

But that aside, given the number of top RU players who've failed to make it in RL over the years, I'd be very wary of signing a poor one. This 'suited to the game' business is a bit of an excuse in my book. Maybe for a halfback or forward, but a big, strong, fast threequarter should be able to make an impact in either code.

However, you may be right. Everyone deserves a second chance ... so long as he's prepared to come on a second-chancer's wages.

100% agree with the last bit (second chancers wages), as yes he would have to be able to prove himself. Again. Perhaps suited to the game is an excuse in your book but my example for that argument would be 'English Rugbys God' (I daren't say anything bad in case he strikes me down) Johnny Wilkinson. Would he of made it in RL? IMHO, he would definately not (at any stage of his career) switch back to RU and he's some sort of legend. Thats my reasoning behind that point. We'll agree to disagree, while its christmas an all that :thumb:

Yes it is, but thats the same Nobby who picked an average at best Tim Smith above him until his injury. If Smith hadn't of become injured, Sam wouldn't of got a look in IMHO.

Myth. It may be worth looking at this page-

Tomkins had started 9 games at stand off before Smith got injured.

Not really a myth as Smith had knocks leaving him out of some of them games. The thing is about Nobby is he wanted to have Sam at Fb so he did have a plan for him.

The fact that Sam came off the bench in the game that Smith got injured in shows otherwise. We were operating then with a similar system to under Maguire where we would have 3 halves on the field at the same time. Tommy at 9, Sam at 7 and Smith at 6. It gave us much more verstatility and in some games worked wonders. In others it didn't, but that was mainly due to our pack being tosh.

He was in the team prior to the Smith injury. FACT!
