Do we as fans not bear any responsibility to respect their privacy? Fair enough knowing he has a family situation going on is bound to be referenced as it's the reason he isn't here. Publicly discussing his mum's impending death and what happens immediately after is surely crossing a line.

I think it is crossing a line, personally. But if nobody announced anything about why he hasn't shown up for pre-season training, we'd have the usual deluge of rumour-mongering and conspiracy theory.

Yeah I agree with the club needing to announce why he isn't here to some extent. People would otherwise assume he was trying to force a release to an NRL club. "The club must be waiting for his mum to die, I wonder how soon after that he will be available." goes against common decency IMO.

Some things are more important than Rugby.

Family is one.

Cut the guy some slack, show some compassion.

I agree but realistically how long as a club do we wait? I’m all for supporting our players welfare wise, give them everything we can but there has to be a line where we assess what’s right for the club AND French. Let’s be fair here, if I was in his boat there’s no way I’d be coming back. Even for months after the bereavement and I think it would be incredibly sad to force that too. Equally were left with our star FB not playing and it will have an effect on the team as a whole. There may well come a time where we sit down with French and iron out a mutually agreed release so he can be with his Mother and not have the pressure of coming back looming over him. That can’t be good to bear for him.

I don’t want French to go. So don’t get me wrong here, but I just wonder if it’s creeping towards a conversation we all in the back of our minds knew would be coming.

Shaun Wane said it during his recent interview, it isn’t me speculating…

The point I’m making is “don’t expect him back straight after it happens because he’s going to need to mourn and be with his family for a while”
