I think our recruitment and retention has been pretty good the last couple of years and it’s looking good for next season too. If we get rid of Cust, Mago, Thornley, Hampshire, potentially Powell? and keep Ellis and maybe Isa and hopefully add a prop and a second row of good quality I think it will mean we will have the strongest squad for a long time next season.

Pretty good yes but when it comes to props it’s been questionable to say the least.

We really need to get the prop signing spot on this time, no projects, no injuries just out & out quality.

It’s a shame that at a time where it seems like we may be prepared to pay a transfer fee (going off the Dupree link), there isn’t really a realistic target in the UK you feel could provide what we need. Props you would like to see here aren’t going to be realistic targets and then even somebody like Dupree isn’t ticking every box in terms of what’s needed.

Has it?

More than half the players we’ve signed last few seasons are listed here in your get rid sentence.

Agreed particularly when you look at the mixed records of overseas front rowers who have come over here in recent years. You can see why the club have been considering Dupree and Thompson in light of this. There's been some good ones e.g. Paasi, Vaughan and Satae but some real letdowns such as Tetevano, Mago, Vete etc. Patrick Mago could easily have been one of the top front rowers in SL if his application was on point. Feels like attitude is the crucial aspect and I guess its difficult to predict what attitude an overseas player will have even if they are saying all the right things.

Hate to say it but I think Saints have got it right last couple of years with Paasi and Matautia (sp?)

I’d be happy with Dupree as long as he was signed in addition to another prop too but can’t see us getting two.

The longer we wait the more likely Thompson is looking unless his future now sorted elsewhere?

It’s not an easy job. I’ve said it before but hopefully they can lean on some contacts over there to try and get an inside track on players. The likes of Lee Briers and Michael Maguire could really help in that regard. I look at the off contract list and there isn’t much doing but clubs need to make cap space sometimes, so it’s not always players off that list you’re bringing in. We’re really close for next season to having a pretty well rounded team ‘if’ we can just get a couple of forward signings right.

They've certainly done better than Wigan have over the last few years.
