When Mathers was at Leeds, they had a solid line. One of the strongest ever IMO, yes if you broke the line the odds were you'd score unless the speed of Leeds' back got you.
Braking the line was the difficulty, NOT getting past Mathers.
in addition to this, Mathers' mistakes would more or less go un-noticed since Leeds would score 2 tries for every one let in.
