Have we gained ANYTHING from this Sale Sharks partnership?

I must admit, it would be nice to take one from Sale for a change, but have they actually got anyone we'd be interested in, or would be prepared to splash the cash on and then sit back for six months while he acclimatised ... and all on the off-chance he MIGHT make it?

I suppose it's inevitable that Sale will cherry-pick from Wigan RU. With Orrell gone, there's no higher RU power in our immediate area ... not that I care.

I can't say I've been massively impressed by Dwyer. Sometimes it seems like he wants a ball of his own which isn't exactly great for a hooker. His decision making is also questionable. To me he seems a bit limited at the moment. Great against an open defence but far less effective against a better side. We've already got Mickey, Powell, Leuluai, Waterworth and Ganson in the squad who can realistically be used at hooker and also Shelford as back up as a last resort. I'd hardly say it's a position where we need to strengthen.

From what I have seen of the lads you mention, which admittedly isn't too much of the younger lads, they all do a similar role as a 9. Dwyer in my opinion brings something different which is why I would like to add him to the squad.

It's tempting because as you say we don't have that type of player but how would you accomdation him?

Is it a simple case of one of McIlorum or Powell misses out?

I'd say yes, it's that simple. All players should have to fight for their place, MM and Powell included.
We have all (most of us) been critical of our stuttering and predictable attack and a player like Dwyer would give us something a bit different to keep the opposition guessing. If they think he might scoot it might just keep a defensive player from sliding out and create a space out wide for our backs to exploit.
That said, he too would have to fight for his place and if he's not doing the business he would find himself bringing water on!!

That article is about a partnership between Wigan RUFC and Sale.

I like the idea of Dwyer. He would offer something completely different to MM & SM who are both very similar. Powell has done very well this year however I don't see what he offers off the bench other than giving MM a rest. Dwyer has good pace, an eye for a scoot & gap (which I'm sure Rogues won't be too chuffed about). He gives tiring defences something else to think about.

I understand the 'selfish' argument but IMO that's a bit unfair, he's young and learning his trade. He possibly runs a bit too much but that can easily be fixed by coaching and experience.

I agree with this. I don't know if our 9's are told not to scoot, but we don't seem to have a 9 who plays off the front foot making quick yard from dummy half scooting bringing others into the game, ala James Roby or Daryl Clark, Dwyer can do this. I think such plays can add a different dimension to our game.

I have been critical in the past of Micky, good player, don't rate him as a 9.

Will be an interesting season for Micky Mac, coming back after a year off. I don't doubt his toughness or defensive ability, but I still feel we lack a bit of a spark in that position going forward and the quality of his distribution has been suspect in the past, imo.

I agree, when a 9 doesn't scoot it eliminates a big element of the positions attack. Similarly like a half who can't take the line on (see Matty Smith).

Re: Rumours and signings v9 : Thu Oct 20, 2016 11:45 am
I think it's the opposite. When you have a 9 that's constantly running from DH they're giving the halves and centres less time on the ball and often forcing halves into DH when they're tackled which makes the next play disjointed. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Wire rely on it a lot and it doesn't work against defences that can scramble.
