In all likelihood Gildart was asked a simple question on if he thought it made a difference, and gave an honest answer.
I more question why IL & KR’s mate Phil Wilkinson thinks it’s a worthwhile story. Bore off. You’re helping the absolute apathy around the place.

Of course they should keep it to themselves to avoid people saying they’re excuse makers ‘but’ it’s a genuine problem we comment on at every home game. The amount of watering that goes on pre game and at half time is pathetic and we then see all the lads out with their forks as the games kicking off. The only things that’s surprised me so far is that they’ve not tried to turn the sprinklers on during the game!

We don’t play at the stadium for nearly two months now yet they still feel the need to drench the pitch pre game. I’m a Wigan Athletic fan as well but it just feels like a power trip to me and it needs to stop!

This has been talked about for some time. The idea that we play on a dripping wet pitch with a ball like a bar of soap when it hasn't rained for a week or more is just ridiculous. Gildart isn't saying anything new.
It's something to do with the maintenance of the pitch and the deal with the ground contractor. Why they can't agree not to sprinkle the day of the game I don't know.
Does it affect the match, yes. Is it the answer to all our problems, certainly not.
