Widdop to miss opener : Thu Jan 09, 2020 11:43 am
Out till Round 4 apparently. Rolled an ankle in training.

Pity. Takes away a bit of the glamour.

It does and that’s a shame. The game was hand picked I’d guess to be all about the new signings of each club going head to head with Widdop, Hastings, Burgess and so on. It also has the side show of Gelling coming back to Wigan.

You can’t help but wonder how Widdop will go over here. He seems to have been hit by one injury after another recently.

I know Wire are a decent team but I’d be bitterly disappointed if we lost to them in a few weeks. Their only real threat is Clark or Austin but both are quite predictable in how they play

The Widdop injury should knock a bit of wind out of their sails as well. On the flip side we should have a real buzz about us if we assume the new lads get through the friendlies fit and we play some decent stuff.

I was surprised to read on the Wire board earlier how a lot of their fans weren’t looking forward to the season. They’ve made a huge signing in Widdop, Gelling will improve them and they’re a good chance of a trophy. Maybe a low expectation level will help them break the OT curse.

I can see them struggling to make the top 5 again if Widdop spends a lot of time on the physio table, I don’t rate Steve price one bit and they won’t win the grand final with him in charge, I can honestly see them not winning the grand final for a long time, their best chance by a mile was in 2013 and 2016 and they blow both big time. No doubt if they win it though they’ll beat us in the final.

Widdop should carry a health warning,i think St.George did the right thing releasing him early from his contract as he was playing less and less games,i like to think we wouldn't have invested a fortune in him.

Regarding that bottom bit we had no interest in him, in pretty sure we was offered him tbh but said no due to his shoulder, he will likely be on more than Hastings as well

I never said we were interested in him i was just saying i wouldn't like to think we were forking out a load of money on someone who has probably played less games than lockers in the last 2-3 years

I can’t say what salary anybody earns for sure but I was told by a Warrington first team player that Widdop was on £500k a year! Huge money if true.

If that's true then they must have more money than sense, his injury record these last 2-3 years is quite frankly appalling, like i mentioned earlier I'm glad we didn't sign him
