Broad has never taken more than three wickets in a Test innings (although hopefully that may change now he's got a couple today), he bowls almost 50% more balls per wicket than Anderson, and his economy rate is only slightly better.

The selectors seem to have been overly keen to fast-track him into the team at a tender age (with Matthew Hoggard discarded far too readily at an age when the typical fast medium bowler is still at his peak) and keep him there. It's pure speculation!! You have no way of knowing this at all. Maybe the effort and added pressure of opening the bowling has the same effect on Sidebottom and he really would average 50 with the bat too
