Spanish clubs ticket prices are very different to here, you can pick up a season ticket at Atlético, for example, for about €300 and they club have over 49,000 season ticket holders in a 52,000 capacity stadium.
However they very rarely have full houses - tickets for matchdays usually start at around €30 but start at double that when the opposition are Real or Barcelona, and often aren't quite as cheap as assumed - due to this many ST holders won't go to more than 10 games a season and they still get their moneys worth. As I posted on here a few weeks back I was going to go to Malaga v Atlético but the cheapest ticket was €100.
One of many reasons for the "lower" crowds in Spain, and probably many other European countries, is simply a cultural thing, actually going to the football week in, week out is a very English thing - most people I know in Spain eat out at restaurants 4 or 5 times a week with their families and/or friends and don't have the money to spend on football tickets, priorities are just different as is the lifestyle - you can also watch all La Liga games live on television.
