In some respects i think he was a little lucky Beckham came along when he did, somewhat took the spotlight off him in terms of the paparazzi and the like

To pick up the Sharpe and Beckham points above (in two posts and I can't be arsed double quoting) - agree with both.

Sharpe not only took the limelight off but also demonstrated the dangers with partying like it's 1999 every Saturday.

Beckham took the limelight off but also demonstrated the benefits to NOT partying like it's 199 every Saturday.

That said, I do enjoy the Giggs story about him jumping on a car in the Hacienda.
