What on earth is going on with Hodgson? Is he picking these players because he's worked with them before perhaps? Has he coached Henderson? What about Kelly, did their paths cross when he managed Liverpool?
Utterly bizarre selections of players with no real ability to contribute in the here and now. They both have potential, but they aren't showing it at club level, so really don't deserve international selection. The time to call players like that up are international friendlies, not tournaments. It's easy to say they won't play so are just there for experience, but it wouldn't take much at all to lose a couple of defenders. A red card here and a muscle strain there.
England aren't in great shape, but it isn't that bad that we need to call up these players. The likes of Richards, Shawcross and Ferdinand are all vastly better players than Kelly. Taking it to the extreme, could anyone argue with Tony Hibbert being selected ahead of Kelly? At least Hibbert finished the season in form and can play fullback and centre back.
