Villa didn't go at a proper 'fair price', though. He's better than Cristiano IMO, but the price difference between those two is huge. Put it this way, Dzeko went for £27m, I'd say Torres is better and more established, so surely the price difference between the two isn't £8m.

Torres is an established world class striker, plagued by injuries, fatigue and lack of surrounding quality over the past 18 months, but there's no doubting he was the best striker in the league before the constant injuries, and there's no doubting he can return back to that level.

And the fact is, an opening offer will nearly always be improved. Torres could still cost Chelsea 50m+ if the deal were to be agreed.

It's odd because there are only a few days left in the market. Signing a player of this magnitude can often take a while, particularly in negotiating. If Chelsea truly wanted him, surely they would have bid more (apparently has a buy-out clause at £50m), or they would have bid earlier in the month?

Very odd move, more to do with the timing, as it's late in the window and mid-season.

Torres is undoubtedly a better players than Dzeko, but Dzeko is more of the type of player City need and should complement the players that we've already got. It was also worth paying a bit extra to sign him at the start of the window rather than dragging it out until 31st. So I'd agree that comparing transfer fees for players signed in different circumstances can be misleading.

If Chelsea really were interested in signing Torres so late in the window I'd have expected them to table a take it or leave it offer of £40m+. It looks to me like they're paving the way for a bid in the summer and/or a case of Abramovich trying to show that he's prepared big money when he doesnt really want to.

And good player that Torres is, how easy would it be for him to fitl in to Chelsea's line up at this stage of the season? Cant say I've ever seen Torres-Drogba as a natural partnership.

I see Torres as quite loyal tbh. Don't think he'd want to go Chelsea, he'd end up back in Spain in a few years.

He's reportedly asked Liverpool to continue negotiations with Chelsea.
