Fernando Torres made it frightfully clear that he didn't want to be at Liverpool with his performances at the start of the year. He doesn't want to know. He only signed his most recent deal because it was for more money. He never had any intention of seeing it out.
Liverpool are daft if they keep him now. With it being 2/3 days to the end of the window, why not encourage some panic shopping? Say to Chelsea, Man City, Real and Barcelona £60m and he's yours? City would go for it if Torres would and I can't see Real Madrid turning down the opportunity given their lack of strikers.
They'd have enough to buy Charlie Adam off Ian Holloway if they did that.
When did he sign his most recent contract? If I remember correctly, it was at the end of the season when we finished 2nd. He didn't sign that for money, the club rewarded him with a new deal to tie him down for an extra year, with the option of a further year, IIRC.
Last year, the only reason he declared his intention to stay was due to lack of serious interest from Chelsea, they made a bid, but never anything serious and their interest was never full. So Torres, injured and not touting the strong interest expected, decided to stay, with promises of new ownership and great management on the horizon. What he got was Roy Hodgson and eventual new ownership, but ownership arriving too late to affect this season's results.
His relationship with the club has run its course, that's clear for all to see, but I thought he had more about him than to drop us in the crapper with so little time left. Even if he hated the previous ownership, at least see out the season before dropping bombshells on us like this. Or, if his intention was to leave, do it on January 1st when we have a month to get rid, not the 28th.
Still, I think the club will take a firm enough stance to keep him until the summer, then he will probably go and be part of Chelsea's rebuilding process. So he'll go from one rebuilding process to another, when, if he wanted to win something, he'd do his utmost to sign for Inter, Barca, Real or United.
