But don't you get it? Liverpool and United were willing to pay £15m/£18m/whatever for Young, despite his contract situation. Young evidently wanted to leave, it's been obvious since January when he wanted to go to Liverpool, but Villa stood firmly in his way. Thing is, neither club stopped and thought "we can have him in 12 months time for £0. maybe we should force Villa into a corner where they have to drop their bid." Instead, we seen two clubs happily offer a bloated price despite the position of power being in the clubs' hands.
When Ozil went to Madrid, there were rumours linking Ozil everywhere but he obviously had his sights set on Madrid. United were strongly linked; however, Madrid forced Werder into a corner and got their man for much cheaper. There was no doubting Ozil's ability and his reputation was at a career-high, the difference is, Madrid treated the transfer the way it should have been treated, whereas this Young transfer seems to have been treated as though he's under a long term contract.
It's not the only deal though, look at Charlie Adam. Somehow, in six months, his value has actually risen, when, in reality, it should be dropping because he can be had for £0. in twelve months time, yet we will probably pay close to £10m for him, when we should be paying about £4m for him.

If Adam is still being chased by 2 or 3 clubs in a year's time and his value doesnt decline due to injury or loss of form, wont he cost just as much? The only difference being that the money would go to him in wages rather than to Blackpool as a transfer fee? His value (ie transfer fee + wages) to the buying club shouldnt change.
