Having said that, If I'm being honest, I would probably have made a similar decision to Shearer. If I had to make the choice Shearer did - e.g. if United were sh*t and Newcastle were challenging for trophies, it would be difficult to turn United down to sign for Newcastle, even if it did increase my chances of winning stuff. Not sure that's the right attitude though - Torres came out with a great quote recently about how, at the end of the day, it's the trophies that you remember.

Personally, I'd rather play for Newcastle than win a trophy with another club.

It wasn't like Shearer chose to win nothing at Newcastle rather than winning at Man United. When he signed for Newcastle they were second in the league and looking like they could push on and become a force at the top.

I don't think many people would have thought that Newcastle would end up winning nothing from the position they were in.
