Re: The Football Manager Thread : Mon May 02, 2011 12:44 pm
Started to give my Bristol City game another go, with 8 games left I was 3rd place in the Championship (2012/2013) and 1 point off 2nd place. Went on a shocking run and ended up in 6th with 1 game to go, 1 point clear of Stoke. I had to play 20th place Hull City in the last game, who were trying to avoid relegation and Stoke played Swansea, with nothing to play for. Had the goal updates tab on, and saw Stoke go 3-0 up early on, and then I conceded a stupid goal from Jimmy Bullard which Marton Fulop dropped. I equalised with 63 mins gone with a Florin Bratu (signed from Liverpool on a free) goal. In injury time, I brought on Jimmy Keohane who had scored 20 goals in 40 games on loan at Luton, the corner in the 93rd minute came in from Jermaine Jenas, Alan Smith volleyed it only to be blocked by my own defender in Lewin Nyatanga but then it fell to Jimmy Keohane who volleyed it into the goal and I finished 6th in the league.

I had to play Leeds in the playoffs, with the first leg being at home I knew I needed a result. I ended up winning 3-0 and thought it was secured that I had a place in the final against Sheffield United. Second leg at Elland road though, I was 3-0 down after 48 minutes, so I brought on Dani Pacheco who scored the goal of the season, running from his own box and lobbing the keeper. I then scored a header from a corner (my 17th of the season) which put me into the final. In the final, I went 1-0 down early on, but a 67th minute goal from Jermaine Jenas took it to extra time, and then penalties. I ended up winning 4-3 on penalties and I'm promoted the the PL once more.

Since it was disastrous last time I was in the PL (I finished 20th with 13 points and a GD of -86) can anybody recommend some signings to help me stay up? My team is currently:

Fulop

Ribeiro
Nyatanga
Stewart
Van Aanholt

Bratu
Smith
Keohane/Elliot
Jenas

Pacheco
Owen

Bell (Goalkeeper)
Fontaine
Amadi-Holloway
Svard
Watt
Maynard
Pitman

Complete overhaul of my squad in the summer, and after 4 games I've lost 2, drawn 1 and won 1. My team now is:

Bell

Nyatanga
Kolo Toure
Hammar
Ribeiro

Castro
Michael Johnson
Cairney
Albrighton

Pacheco
Ngog

All in all, probably cost me around £20m to put the side together, and sold some players too.

Well, I managed to survive in the season in the premier league, ending up finishing in 14th place after a successful season which saw me get the the quarter finals of the League cup (lost 2-0 to Man City), 3rd round of the FA Cup (but it was away at Chelsea) and ended up with 42 points. This season I want to secure a mid table finish, before progressing year on year. My team at the moment is:

Bell

Fuchs
Amadi-Holloway
Smalling
Kolo Toure
Ribeiro

Cairney
Jenas
Lallana

Ngog
Evans

Pacheco
Albrighton
Keohane
Maynard
Van Aanholt
Castro

I started my first game as Liverpool for a nice easy start, but N'gog has been fantastic for me as an impact player, or playing against the lesser teams.

He is a great player for me, the one problem being that he is quite injury prone, just got a broken foot against Man City and is out for between 4-5 months.

Christian Benitez plays well above his attributes. Scored plenty for me in the CL with Porto, including the year we won it he done the business in the final as Dzeko was banned. Available for about 2.5m too.

Signed Edinson Cavani as I needed a big powerful goalscorer to play as my lone striker, and the man is an absolute beast! With Willian on the left, Suarez on the right, and the likes of Matias Fernandez, Eden Hazard, Chiquinho, Gerrard and Meireles supplying the through balls, I'm banging in the goals left right and centre.

And so you aim towards the sky,
And you'll rise high today,
Fly away, Far away,
Far from pain....

How far over your salary budget can you go before your chairman begins to have a word or two???
